Cancel
Cancel

Technical Definition-Cutting the animation of a move short. Characters are allowed to cancel moves through various means. The most common way is inputting a move during the animation of another move so that the animation of the first move is ended prematurely and the second move starts immediately. Characters may also be able to cancel moves with dashes, jumps, or specific inputs depending on the game. Cancelling a normal move into a special move is known as 2-1 (pronounced "2 in 1") and is the basis for combos in modern fighting games. In notation, cancels are usually depicted by "xx" e.g. "cr.mk xx fireball" meaning "crouching medium kick cancelled into fireball."

In Other Words-"Fuck! I don't want to do that anymore, if that's ok."-Jackass 3D, 2010

Ryu performs a fireball after a cr.mk (left) and cr.mk xx fireball (right). The cancelled version is visually faster and is a combo.

Games allow various other means of cancelling attacks such as by dashing (1), jumping (2), or blocking (3).
